Scottish Terrier

From the moment you clap eyes on that varminty expression and see the heads up/tails up attitude, you just know that this breed is a little power pack. Not affectionately nicknamed “Old Diehard” for nothing, this determined little fellow was bred to hunt badgers and foxes and has been adored and owned by many famous people just for his loyal and faithful nature. The Scottie shows great spirit and should exhibit that he has the wherewithal for the job in his rugged appearance combined with power.

His coat is one that is a close lying double coat with wiry, harsh, outer coat. Put together well, trimmed and blended into the furnishings for a distinctive Scottie silhouette, Judges find the Scottie is an arresting Terrier and very hard to go past without pulling a lot of attention to him. That high intelligence is also a great attraction as he learns well and is smart enough to remember!

This is a traditional hard coated terrier where correct grooming and preparation is of extreme importance.

Shampooing a Scottie requires a specific terrier shampoo that will not soften or open the coat, for this use Plush Puppy Texture + is a product formulated using the latest technology to retain and improve coat texture. Recommended to thoroughly yet gently cleanse and deodorise the coat of Terriers and other wire, harsh or coarse coated breeds without softening or compromising texture. It’s ideal for boosting body and coarseness in coats of all colours and coat types. Formulated to be pH controlled, creates/ maintains texture, easy to rinse out and low irritant with a subtle apple fragrance. Incorporates Gentian Root Extract, Juniper Fruit Extract, St John’s Wort Leaf Extract, Norway Spruce Leaf Extract, Hayflower Extract, Lemon Balm Leaf Extract, Arnica Flower Extract. Use at 1:10 or apply undiluted directly to areas requiring cleansing. Rinse thoroughly.

For those with black Scotties, to keep that depth in the colour use Plush Puppy Black Opal Shampoo diluted 1 part shampoo to 1 part water and leave on for approx. 10 minutes and then rinse. Repeat as needed to maintain depth of colour. For coats requiring a toning quality to neutralize warm/red tones use Plush Puppy Herbal Whitening Shampoo, use at 1 part shampoo to 5 parts shampoo.

For Brindles and Wheaten’s, use the Plush Puppy Whitening Shampoo at the same 1:5

This is a do not use conditioner breed, instead, use oil on the coats at this point for moisture and protection to the hair by adding 1-2 teaspoons (depending on the coat) of Plush Puppy Seabreeze Oil to 2 L (1/2 gallon) warm water and liberally saturating the coat and leave in – do not rinse. This will not be greasy but give that harsh weather protection without softening as a conditioner will. This is a water soluble oil and adds all the goodness of Evening Primrose Oil, Calendula Oil etc. to bring up the healthy coat vigor for the discerning show person.

Now, blow dry using your Plush Puppy Ultimate Pin Brush so as not to overstretch the hair until it is at least 3/4 dry and then switch to the Plush Puppy Ultimate Anti-Static Porcupine Brush which is 1/2 dialon pin and 1/2 bristle enabling you to smooth the coat. Aiming the air of the dryer to follow the growth of the hair and not against the growth. For the legs and hocks use the Plush Puppy Ultimate Slicker Brush. All brushes are exclusive to Plush Puppy using the finest of materials and ergonomically designed.

When brushing during the week or at shows use Plush Puppy OMG. This at a dilution rate of 1 part omg to 30 parts water. At this rate it provides excellent hydration when brushing yet does nor overly soften. Brushing a dry coat only causes friction and stress to the coat.

Still requiring me texture then, add a few light sprays of Plush Puppy Ruffy Tuffy Coat Spray for added texture. Spray as many times as you wish till required texture is achieved. This is not a sticky spray but a “scratchy” feel spray to get that level of harshness so desired.

To Increase texture and in aiding hand stripping and carding use Plush Puppy Powder Puff Terrier. This remarkable powder uses a scientific blend of powders that add texture and also deodorize the coat.

For those needing an aerosol spray use Plush Puppy HOLD is a strong sculpting spray scientifically formulated for shaping all types of coats on Show Dogs. The quick drying formulation won’t become sticky and will not build-up. HOLD can be removed with ease by simply shampooing the coat. Contains Pro Vitamin B5 to improve elasticity, moisture retention and flexibility in their coat hair. We recommend using and storing at normal room temperature for a perfect mist spray. Optimum spray distance is approximately 30cm (12 inches).

The reason the Plush Puppy has more than one way to add texture is we understand that individual dogs need at times different products to achieve desired results.

To groom that “just so look”, the Scottie head is best achieved using Plush Puppy Sit N Stay for the shaping you need for the typical face. Using a small amount rubbed into the hands, apply down the sides of the face and eye brows to give you the look. Shape those eyebrows to perfection and this will hold them into place.

The silhouette shape of the Scottie is of great importance but not one I can attempt to begin to teach through words on paper. The art of stripping with hand/knife is something that much be watched and learned. Some are superb at this and it is a treat to see their skill. It does nonetheless takes time to do even when mastered and there are no short cuts to achieving the lofty heights of a true Scottie presenter.

For between shows maintenance, add Plush Puppy Reviva Coat to the furnishings and to the edges and underbelly of the coat for protection. This is a great between show moisturiser to use without overly softening the coat. It is the perfect product for after show bathing out of the furnishings, to protect and moisturize.

Show day a mist with Plush Puppy Odour Muncher will leave a fresh smell.

This is one of the unmistakable terrier breeds, defined by its classic and distinctive Scottish Terrier silhouette. A breed if shown to its rich history makes a strong contender in any line up of dogs.
